Orthotics are prescribed custom insoles which are made for a specific foot type. These insoles fit into shoes to improve comfort as well as walking mechanics. Orthotics are used to treat a multitude of conditions including (but not limited to) foot, heel, knee and low back pain, as well as forms arthritis. They can be made from a variety of materials, either soft or more rigid, depending on the patient’s needs and condition.
Bracing is the clinical field which involves applying a brace to any existing limb. A brace can be applied, for example to a wrist for work or sport injuries, a back brace for issues related to scoliosis, or an ankle for complications due to stroke or cerebral palsy. Braces can either be custom made or pre-fabricated depending on the needs of the patient.
